Samhain is approaching fast! Samhain, also known as Autumn Cross-Quarter, Halloween, All Souls’ Night, Dark Moon, and Feast of the Dead, is the ending and beginning of the Celtic New Year (which is why some people call it Witches’ New Year). On this day, especially at dawn and dusk, the veil between the seen world and the unseen world of spirit is particularly thin. This is a time to make contact with the dead, by lighting bonfires and lanterns, and you can also do the following 6 ways to celebrate Samhain.
Display Photos of Your Ancestors
Gather photos of your older relatives and deceased ones and display them on your altar.
Host a Dumb Supper
It probably sounds really insulting, but it’s super surreal. Hosting a “dumb supper” actually refers to a meal held in silence.
This is a formal ritual takes the form of a dinner to honor the dead, especially those deceased in the last year. Or, for those ancestral spirits to whom the dinner guests wish to show special reverence.
Take a Trip to a Graveyard
This is the perfect time of the year to send a message to someone you love on the other side. Visit the cemetery where they are resting, or simply communicate from your home or in nature.
Ideas:
- Write a letter and burn it in a dish.
- Simply speak to them
- Do a Samhain tarot/oracle spread.
Speaking of a Tarot Spread.
Since “veil between worlds” is at its thinnest this time of year, this is the best time to seek guidance and insight from those who have passed on.
Try tarot or oracle cards (you can find my indie oracle decks in my shoppe) or other divination systems.
Burn a Black Candle
Black candles symbolize transition, protection, and the veil between worlds. Light a black candle and set your intentions! (This is our Banish candle)
Honor Your Ancestors
This is the perfect time to show reverence to deceased loved ones and ancestors.
Try a Pumpkin Spell
A simple way to celebrate Samhain is to carve a pumpkin with symbols that represent your spells intent. On the night of Samhain, sprinkle some cinnamon , light a candle and set your intention. I’m doing this for sure on the 31st!
